The analysis of the system as consistency: of art and media: institution critique / The museum system: Danger Museum

The critique of the system is a consistent and important aspect of my practice. In the different collaborations, I develop projects based on different systems. For example, Danger Museum deals with the system of art exhibitions. The early period of Danger Museum projects (1998-2001) created alternative platforms which questioned the system of art exhibitions. It is within the act of creating models of exhibitions and seeking alternative networks, Danger Museum critiques the art institutions.

Similarly, p-10 addresses another aspect of the art system and through another method. As mentioned earlier, that part of the act of ‘founding’ was to start something new and starting p-10 was to create what the founders thought was lacking in the art system in Singapore. p-10 was started to address the lack of discourse and independent curatorial efforts in Singapore. In this, I felt the need to assume role of a curator because it was necessary to address the issues in the art system which cannot be fulfilled in the capacity of the artist.

tsunamii.net, a media collective (2001-2005) whose main activities were art making. Through tsunamii.net, I created internet based work (net art) but not in the conventional sense of net art where art was being accessed online. Instead, tsunamii.net main body of work, the alpha series looked critically at the infrastructure of the Internet and showed installations and created browsers which challenged the audience’s perception of Internet as a politically neutral space. On the subject of system, the work of tsunamii.net reflected on the Internet as a system and on another level through unconventional ‘net art’ broaden the discourse of the new media art system.
