Media in Asia Master class
Call for expressions of interest
24-25 September 2007
Postgraduates and early-career researchers (ECRs) from Curtin and
Murdoch Universities working on media and culture in Asia are invited to
submit applications to participate in a two-day event funded by the ARC
Cultural Research Network (CRN), and organised by local CRN members, Dr
Wanning Sun and Dr Mick Broderick. The event will comprise a one and a
half day master class led by two leading researchers from Melbourne
University, followed by a discussion forum featuring academics and
students working on the media in Asia from WA universities. The master
class will focus on common issues faced by researchers in this area,
including the use of western frameworks and methodologies to study the
media in Asia, the consequences of this, and what alternatives there
might be. This event seeks to help participants in developing useful
empirical and theoretical strategies to address their common
epistemological and methodological issues.
This is a rare opportunity for participants to receive valuable input
and comments on their work by Professor Vera Mackie and Dr Fran Martin,
both of whom are experienced and distinguished scholars in the fields of
Asian media and culture, and whose visit to Perth is being funded by the
CRN specifically for this event. Work submitted for discussion in the
master class can be based on a chapter of your thesis, or, for ECRs, a
sample of your ongoing research. (For the purpose of this forum,
participants who have submitted a PhD thesis after June 2002 will be
considered ECRs.) A short list of ten applicants will be selected to
have their papers commented on by the master class panel, and
workshopped by the forum as a whole.
Submissions should include the following details:
Full name
University affiliation
Email address
Phone contact number
Working title of proposed paper
Draft of proposed paper.
Submissions must be no more than 5000 words in length. Send all
submissions to marg@curtin.edu.au
Deadline for submissions: Friday 13 July 2007.
Attendance at the master class is free of charge for all who wish to
attend, but registration is essential for catering purposes. Please
email marg@curtin.edu.au to register. For more information or enquires,
email Denise Woods at marg@curtin.edu.au or call 9266 1891.
