The nondescript eatery, located next to the Post-Museum, could well go unnoticed in this charmingly dilapidated neighbourhood in Little India. Exposed red-brick walls line the quirky cafe, while the tables and orange plastic chairs are reminiscent of community centres during the late 1980s.
Post-Museum, an independent art, cultural and social space, and Food #3,a cafe set up simultaneously to complement the cultural space, was opened by husband and wife duo, Woon Tien Wei and Jennifer Teo, in September 2007.
A trained artist and curator, Mr Woon, 35, says Food #3 is an artwork that takes the form of a social enterprise cafe. It is a place where like-minded people in the arts community can gather to share their ideas over good food in a contemporary space.
Kitschy lampshades, including one made with recycled plastic bottles, hang from the ceiling of the airy cafe while kooky knick-knacks line its window sills.

The eatery stocks Cafedirect, a fair-trade coffee, and becomes a soup kitchen on Monday evenings, which is run by volunteers to serve the needy who live in the vicinity. The rest of the week, the cafe is helmed by Mr Benjamin Kway, who has revamped Food #3's menu to offer vegetarian, non-vegetarian and raw food options. The chef, who learnt his craft in Australia, offers dishes such as a juicy lamb burger ($16.90), barley risotto with a mix of portobello, oyster and shiitake mushrooms ($12.90), and a laksa pesto pasta served with sambal and topped with diced aubergine ($11.90, above).
