Three decades after the communists emerged as victors in the war, it was now a fully integrated member of the globalised capitalist economy.
On the pavement in Saigon, the Coffee Lady watched all of this unfold, and yet she saw no change in her life. “I earned the same, lived in the same room,” she says. “There were more things in the shops, but the prices kept going up. The country changed, but not for people like me. The people who had connections got richer.”
