Japan Foundation Asia Center organises another Curator's workshop this November. Well, I don't qualify but I think it is a great initiative to allow young curators to network. Well if you have the time please apply.

1. INTRODUCTION

The Japan Foundation Asia Center announces a call for applications to a Curators’ Workshop from November to December 2015 in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam. It is a programme aimed at enhancing expertise in curating contemporary art and related platforms. Participants are required to present an exhibition/art project proposal at the workshop and two selected participants will receive a grant for a two-week study tour in Japan (February 22–March 6, 2016), after which they will be asked to organise an exhibition/art project in early 2017 in Malaysia.

The general theme of the workshop is “What is Southeast Asia?” Southeast Asia is, on the whole, understood historically as a region that is located between China and India where a diverse range of cultures and ethnic groups exist. It has been a strategic location where vessels from the East and the West cross. Many in the region once experienced colonisation by the West in the 19th century and became independent nation states after the Second World War. Today, the region collectively draws attention from elsewhere as ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), an association which encourages collaboration among its members in the political, economic, social, and cultural fields. Under this scheme, members in the region have increasingly become influential on each other’s societies and cultures in a broader term.

But for those who reside in the region, what does this regional binding of “Southeast Asia” mean? In the field of the visual arts, for example, national art histories have been written, but is it possible to  write a regional art history for the whole of Southeast Asia? How can curators contribute to the regional art scene, while also taking part in the global art scene, both made possible as a result of the advancement in information technology?

For this workshop, with the assistance of facilitators from the participating countries, the general theme of “What is Southeast Asia?” is broken down into sub-themes that are tailored to meet the local conditions. The applicants of the workshop are requested to submit a project plan that anticipates diverse approaches to the suggested theme along with their applications. We look forward to the submission of challenging proposals.

Open call for proposals!

The Artists Village - Pulau Ubin Artists-in-Residency Programme is conducting an open call for artists to apply for the residency. This Artist In Residency (AIR) program is located in Pulau Ubin. The AIR program will be offering artists an opportunity to stay and work on the island of Pulau Ubin. We have a vision to use the island as a canvas to create art. The artists will be staying in the residency house equipped with basic workshop tools. This residency is an attempt to get cultural and art practitioners to work in close contact with a comparatively unspoiled natural environment in Singapore. We hope to provide a chance for artists to develop a different perspective from the experience of living on the island. At the same time, we recommend intending participants to inculcate a view towards working in and with nature and eco-friendlier art practices in this unique residency.

Since 2011, the programme had present many SIngapore and international artists. These artists include Mike Cooper, Vichukorn Tangpaiboon, Jay Koh, Dennis Tan, Mike HJ Chang, Wang Chuyu, Zhang Kexin, Jacquelyn Soo, Ian Carlo Jaucian, Yuzuru Maeda, Wu Jun Han, Truong Thien, etc.

This project is organized by The Artists Village.

The application for 2014-2015 is open now. For this cycle, we are having collaborations with our overseas partners for an exchange residency programme. There are two parts to the residency programme. For the first part, artists will stay and work on Pulau Ubin in Singapore. As for the second part, the resident artists will be have an opportunity to attend another one of the residency programmes organised by our collaborating partners in overseas (China / Vietnam / South Korea). Therefore we regret that we are only able to accept applications from Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents. More information on our overseas collaborators will be release soon.

Applicants are highly encouraged to propose projects which touch on environmental issues or Pulau Ubin itself.

Provided for resident artists during their stay:

1. Artists fee of SGD$1,200 and materials fee of SGD$300.
2. Public transport travel card for traveling within main city (exclude credit top-ups)
3. Accomodation and working studio on the island
4. Basic working tools
5. Bicycle for moving around on the island
6. Mobile broadband Internet
7. 12-Volts power supply (for charging up mobile phones and small laptops)
8. Publicity for all events
9. Assistance for exhibition set-up

Below are the criteria for artists to apply for the residency:

1. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
2. Applicants must be a Singapore Citizen or Permanent Resident.
3. The minimum duration for residency is 1 month.
4. We welcome artists from any disciplines.
5. Selected artists will have the option to use materials found on the island.
6. Resident artists are to present a talk during the period of the residency. They can present their final work in the form of an exhibition or performance. The venue will be YOUR MOTHER GALLERY. However, resident artists can opt for other venues (subject to availability) to showcase their work.
7. Applicants are to submit their residency proposal with all relevant materials via Email to us. Please see “Residency application form”.

EPAF 2010 open call for proposals

The Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle and the Art and the Present Foundation invite young performance artists (born after 1 January 1975) to submit proposals of performances for the open programme of the European Performance Art Festival EPAF 2010.
The festival will take place from 7 to 9 October 2010 at the Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle and in the public space of the city of Warsaw.
Artists invited to participate in the festival will receive board and lodging, the photographic and video documentation of performances presented during the festival, and a fee of 800 PLN.
In order to participate in EPAF 2010, please send an application containing the following:
1) full name, biographical note, address
2) a short description (not more than 100 words each) of two proposed performances – one in public space and one in gallery space – including their expected duration as well as the materials, equipment and space needed
3) video material documenting previous performances – recorded on DVDVideo, MiniDV or VHS with a description containing the title, date and place of the performances
4) 5 photographs documenting previous performances – in digital form, with a description containing the title, date, place and author of the photographs
